Mike “Bubba” Smith
Helper/Hurricane

Our beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend, Michael Merin “Bubba” Smith, 48, passed away May 22, 2012 in Hurricane, Utah.  With a police escort to the hospital Mike was born October 25, 1963 in Salt Lake City, Utah; the second of four children to Michael Edward Smith and Madelyn Peterson Semken.  Mike married Wendy Jean MacDonald September 8, 1990 in Helper, Utah and shared 21 years living both in Helper and LaVerkin.  Together they had two handsome sons Kyle and Kody.  These boys are Mike’s pride and joy; he was their best friend, wonderful father and always there for them.
Mike was raised both in Salt Lake City and Helper.  After graduating from Carbon High School in Price, Mike began his career working for the family businesses; Texaco Gas Station and later Smith Transit Charter Inc. in Helper which he served as Vice President for fifteen years.  He then moved his family to La Verkin which he began a very successful professional truck driving career.
Mike’s greatest joy came from serving his family. Mike will always be remembered for his quick wit, happy laugh, beautiful smile and big bear hugs. Mike loved the outdoors and spending that time with family and friends which included; four wheeling, camping and his greatest love skiing and boating on any lake especially Lake Powell.
Mike is survived by his wife, Wendy Smith; sons: Kyle Merin (Laycee) Smith; Kody Graham Smith; mother, Madelyn Peterson of Price; two sisters, Sue Ann (Scott) Heino of Price; Corinna (Elvin) Anderson of Moab; brother, Corey (Genefer) Smith of Helper.  Special nephew and nieces; Joshua Heino, Jessica Heino, Ashley (Dan) Smith, Niqui McNulty, Sydney and Savana Smith.  Mother- and father-in-law; Kathleen and Duncan MacDonald of La Verkin; special life long friend Tracy Wilcox and many other family members and friends.  Mike was preceded in death by his father, Michael Edward Smith.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 26, 2012, 1:00 p.m. in the La Verkin 4th Ward; 481 North Main Street.  Family and friends may join the family for a viewing at 12:30 p.m. at the same location.  Funeral services are under the direction of Heideman Hughes Mortuary of St. George.
At Mike’s request cremation services will take place.
Graveside and burial service will take place Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Richfield City Cemetery under the direction of Magleby Mortuary of Richfield.

We are so sorry for you loss. Mike's life was way to short. We will always remember Mike doing Dolly Parton's "Coat of Many Colors." He almost sounded like Dolly and it was such a hoot.

I am so sorry to hear about Mike's passing away. He was a friend of my brother Matt Wise. I remember one trip I took Matt, Bubba, and little Mike Smith skiing. I think it was the first time Bubba had ever been skiing. I think the boys were in 9th or 10th grade at the time. We all laughed a lot that day and had fun. Later I was a travel agent and went on a few trips with Mike when he was the bus driver. We still laughed a lot and had fun. I know you will miss him terribly and my heart aches for all of you. My thoughts and prayers will be with your family.

Dear Wendy and Boys,

We were shocked and saddened to hear about Mike's passing. He was way too young to be taken from you but I'm sure you take comfort knowing that he is finally free from the pain he has had to endure. Now you all have a special guardian angel watching over you. Hold on to the great memories you have had with him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

It's been quite some time since I was able to talk with Mike, but his smile, voice, humor and gentle ways left an impression on me that is shared by all that were privileged enough to meet Mike. At random times I would remember something he would say and my day was always a bit brighter. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

So sorry to hear about Mike's passing. Mike is my older "boy" cousin and I always enjoyed visiting with them. He took us for rides in his "fast" car and it was very exciting for me. We also went to the movie "Take Down" in Price. It's been many years since I have seen him, but learning of his passing brought back these and other good memories I have. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.
