Shawn Koontz

Layton, Utah

Matthew Shawn Koontz passed away on January 4, 2014 in Saudi Arabia. Born August 14, 1959 in Sacramento, California to Dwight and Mary Iles Koontz. Shawn lived in many locations throughout his life including California, Utah, Minnesota, South Carolina, Tennessee, and, most recently, Saudi Arabia.

As a young man, Shawn served an LDS mission in the England London South Mission. On March 7, 1981, Shawn married his wife, Anne Whitlock, in the Oakland, California LDS Temple.

Shawn was a mechanical engineer by trade but enjoyed camping, backpacking, fixing cars, and playing video games in his down time. He loved the ocean, building things, and Dutch oven cooking. Shawn could always be counted on to bring a stupid joke to any conversation.

Shawn is survived by his wife Anne; sons: Dwight (Becca) Koontz; Preston (Whitney) Koontz; daughters: Crystal, Alexis and Felicia Koontz; siblings: David (Kathleen), Janet, Richard (Linda), and Charles (Janet). He will be greatly missed by his three grandchildren, Rachel, Michael and Connor.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in the Richfield 11th Ward Chapel, 985 South 400 West, where friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Richfield City Cemetery. So sorry to hear of Shawn's passing. I went to high school him and was in the same ward in Half Moon Bay California. He was a great guy with a great sense of humor. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I got reacquainted with Shawn from our High School years (class of 77). While chatting I got the impression that Shawn lived a very very full life. I admire all that he achieved and I am saddened to learn of his death. Shawn had mention to me some of his future goals. I will remember that he was looking ahead in life. He was always very friendly and giving. As his classmate in Half Moon Bay I can recall his willingness to listen and be a buddy and to offer a smile. I enjoyed looking at his recent family photos because I can see a life well lived.

So sorry to hear about Shawn. My prayers go out to his wife and kids. I also went to school and church with Shawn in Half Moon Bay. I spent many hours with him fooling around at the church farm. Driving tractors, throwing leek seeds at each other, playing on a tire swing. I remember riding in his TBird going to church dances. I remember once him driving Wes Holland and I "over the hill" to the drive in movie to see Star Wars. It has been great to see what he has been up to the past couple of years on facebook. I am sad to see he has gone. I also look forward to seeing him soon.
