Mason Bailey

Richfield, Utah

Elder Mason Lewis Bailey, 19, of Provo/Richfield, took the "Angel Flight," home to the arms of his loving Heavenly Father on March 2, 2014, while serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Stockholm Sweden Mission. Mason was born November 12, 1994 in Provo.

Mason grew up in Provo but, spent the last two years of his life with family in Richfield. Mason was a person who truly enjoyed life with a vigor for the outdoors and the beauties the Lord has provided. Mason loved everyone and displayed this by sharing his hugs with all those around him. He never missed a chance for a new experience: horses, hunting, fishing, skiing, canyoneering, caving, sky-diving and anything outdoors were his passions.

Mason emulated the Savior’s life by being kind to everyone; he loved his family dearly and adored little children. You could always find Mason taking care of others, and putting their needs first. After graduating high school he was anxious to serve a mission and was one of many who left at 18 years of age. Mason served diligently and with honor. We love and miss you Mason.

He is survived by his parents: Lewis (Marcy) Bailey, Ruidoso, New Mexico and Rachelle Dunn Bailey, Provo; brother and sister: Morgan Lewis Bailey, Mikayti Shell Bailey, of Provo; step-brothers and sisters; Wyatt, Kage, Stefan, Justine and Chelcy; grandparents: Noel and Tonya Bailey, Terral and Debbie Dunn, all of Richfield.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 17, 2014 at 12:00 Noon in the Richfield East Stake Center, 800 N. 500 E. where friends may call Sunday evening from 6-9 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Richfield City Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti

To the Bailey Family, I am so sad to hear of this tragedy. My heart goes out to each of you. I have known Noel and Tanya for a long, long time, and taught Lewis in Sunday School when he was 8. I love and respect your family and have the utmost confidence in the type of person Mason is. Blessings and comfort to you all. - - Tom Borg, Layton

I had the honor to meet Elder Bailey on the flight to Europe. We talked a great deal while waiting to board the flight out of Salt Lake City. This chance meeting meant a great deal to me. To see the enthusiasm and pride that he was bringing as a representative of the church made me want to be a better person. My daughter and I have cried over Elder Bailey, even though we only just met him the one time. Our heartfelt condolences to the entire family over the loss of this great man.

Dear Bailey and Persons Family,

We did not know your son, but our daughter knew and loved him. They served together in the MTC and in the mission field. She had just seen Mason a couple of days before at a conference and they had spoken. He was particularly excited about some family members who had attended church that week back home. My daughter expressed to him what an amazing example he is and that his family is blessed by his service. She has no doubt his service continues on the other side of the veil. This is her tribute to him, that she sent us yesterday:

I was with Elder Bailey in the MTC and got to know him very well out here in the mission field. It is very, very tragic. It's been a hard day. Elder Mason Bailey was a fantastic missionary, so committed to the work. He had a very special ability to make people around him happy. He had a light within him. Elder Bailey was one of the happiest people I have ever met. He is the definition of the word "cheerful". I LOVED being around him and talking to him because he made the people around him happy, too. He was an incredible missionary. I feel so privileged that I had the opportunity to know him. He got a final transfer call to heaven and his missionary work continues on the other side of the veil. He is in a better place now and I know we will all see him again. I am grateful for my Savior Jesus Christ, who overcame death, so that we can all do the same. "How sweet, the joy this sentence gives: I know, that my Redeemer lives."

Please know your family has been in our prayers continually since Sunday night when we heard. You will remain in them for weeks to come.

Dear Family of Mason Bailey;

My son was in the MTC with Elder Bailey and was his bunk buddy. We only got a 3 sentence note from him on Monday telling us his good friend had died. I can't imagine the shock of receiving that phone call, I have realized many times over it could have been us. I am so grateful for the knowledge that where our sons are and what they are doing is the greatest thing they could ever do, by giving up 2 years of their life to pour out service to God's children in Sweden. I feel strongly that Elder Mason Bailey is still doing that work, but has an even greater insight now to help all those who have felt his love and joy and been affected by it. I know my son was devastated, and I have shed many tears this week thinking of you and the loss you must feel. I pray that comfort & wisdom will begin to replace and help fill that void. It will never be gone completely, but it can be filled with hope, love & joy. The joy that Mason felt can be felt by us all. He is and always will be an example of strength and love to our family. I know God lives, and Mason is in his care. God bless you now and always.

Dear Bailey family, I never has the chance to meet Elder Bailey. My Son Elder Tyler Schiffman recently returned from the Stockholm Sweden mission. We were blessed to be able to go and pick him up last July. We met many of the missionaries in the area and we able to visit with President and Sister Newel. I wanted you to know what a great area your son was in. The missionaries truly love one another. They all have the Missionary smile from ear to ear. The Mission president is constantly thinking and praying for those boys (and girls). The members are so strong and welcoming. It truly is a wonderful place to be. We were able to travel to many of the areas our son served in. (I'll try to post some pictures.)
My heart aches for your lose. You and your family have been in our prayers since we heard about the accident. You truly have an entire mission behind you.

Dear Bailey Family,
I know of your great son via my son Aldste Tyson Allsop, he was Aldste Baileys Zone Leader for the past few months, and had recently been on splits with him. I heard the news from my son that evening and was torn to know of your loss. Tyson said the missionaries all loved Mason and the Swedish people there share in your loss. His spirit will be missed in Sweden but never forgotten.
He was and is still LOVED.

Our hearts were truly saddened by the news of Elder Bailey. We send our love to your family. Norman remembers Lewis Bailey ( Masons father) in the Cub Scouts and Priesthood classes. I am Normans second wife, you will remember me as Marlene Deaton. David and Noel were in the High Priest Presidency, and we became dear friends with Tonya and Noel. Elder Mason Bailey has a great heritage and family. We know the Lord will bless you and comfort you at this time of sorrow. We send our love and prayers. Love, Norman and Marlene Harris. Dear Family of Elder Bailey,
Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the "transfer" of your missionary son. In January of 2000, a missionary from our ward was killed in Iowa along with three of his companions and the driver of the other vehicle. At the funeral, where President Monson was the keynote speaker, we had the idea to organize a horseback ride in honor of these missionaries. Elder Grant Bangerter spoke at the first memorial service which has become known as the Parley P. Pratt Missionary Memorial Project. To date, we have gathered and published the "rest of the story" for more than 180 missionaries in three volumes entitled The Transfer.
We would be honored to include Mason Bailey's story in the next volume. If this is something you would like to explore, please do not hesitate to call or send an email for additional information.
