Charlene Howell
Joseph, Utah
Charlene Anderson Howell slipped peacefully from this life into the next on July 11, 2024, in the hospital in Cedar City, surrounded by her loving family. She fought a valiant battle with cancer for many years. She was determined to sacrifice and live faithfully until her earthly mission was complete. Throughout her life she was an example of courage and strength, even amongst tremendous physical trials.
Charlene was born to Fred and Margene Anderson on July 9, 1960, in Payson. She grew up in Oak City and Delta with ten siblings. She spent many happy childhood memories working on the family farm and their trucking business. Charlene spoke often of the need to work hard and fill your life with meaningful acts of service, and she truly lived what she taught.
Charlene served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Dallas, Texas. She met her eternal sweetheart, Jerry Howell, at Utah State University. They were married and sealed in the Manti Temple on June 13, 1986 after Charlene completed her degree in Elementary Education. She taught for one year before leaving her profession to raise seven children. She was an incredible homemaker and used her talents in sewing, baking, gardening, teaching and organization to fill the lives of her family with love, comfort, and gospel learning. Charlene faithfully accepted any calling asked of her, and would fulfill those assignments without need for recognition or praise. She continually served others.
After raising all her children she returned to the classroom where she taught elementary grades at the Monroe Elementary School and Athenian eAcademy for several years. She chose to retire when she was not physically able to continue. Her talents as a teacher and her Christ-like love touched the lives of many children and families. Charlene was a “jewel in the Gospel” and an exemplar of our Savior, Jesus Christ. In spite of immense physical suffering towards the end of her life, she was known to always answer “I’m fine!” and then listen and act compassionately to the needs and concerns of others. Her greatest hope and joy was the prospect of having an eternal family. She never wavered in her testimony of our Savior, and her presence will be deeply missed.
Charlene is survived by her loving husband, Jerry; children, Katherine (Ryan) Doty, Kristina (Nic) Lindsey, Russell (Brittany) Howell, Brian (Lisa) Howell, Joshua (Jennifer) Howell, Kimberly Howell and Kaylene Howell; 6 grandchildren; and adoring siblings.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Margene Anderson; siblings, Karen Bunn and Janet Terry; and grandson, Henry Howell.
