Gregory Clark Abbott was welcomed back to his heavenly home on June 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Greg was born in Troy, North Carolina, on September 11, 1957 to Omega Clark and Nancy (Gilliam) Abbott. He graduated from Camden County High School in Camden, NC in 1975 as Valedictorian of his class and as an accomplished athlete in baseball and football. He had a passion for wildlife and hunting; particularly turkeys and small game. He was also often known to barefoot water ski and show off to all his friends in the river behind their Camden home. As a new convert, he was called to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Switzerland, Geneva mission, teaching in the French language. He later graduated from North Carolina State University in Wildlife Biology and was then prompted to “move out west” and further his education at Brigham Young University. He fell in love with his sister’s friend, Elizabeth (Liz) Hill, and they were married in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple on June 21, 1985. Greg worked for the United States Department of Agriculture as an Entomologist and played a critical role, year after year, controlling the spread of Mormon crickets and grasshoppers in the entire western region of the United States. Along with balancing his work and church leadership positions, he was always coaching various sports teams. From softball and baseball to football and track, he coached at all levels from little league to high school. He poured his heart and soul and his love of sports into not only his four children, but also countless other young athletes over the course of 35 years. He truly had a special, unique bond with every athlete he ever coached.

Throughout his 67 years of life, Greg held various titles. He was husband, dad, brother, son, uncle, cousin, Elder, Bishop, President, coach, turkey guide, and friend. Among all the titles he had earned, his favorite title was “Hunny”; the name by which all eight of his grandchildren know him. How fitting it is for them to have deemed him such a nickname, as Greg has come up with (and remembered) a nickname for just about every person he has ever known. He had a way of making every single person feel like they were his very favorite. His example of Christlike love and kindness will live on with all those he has influenced for the better. The world is a better place because of Greg Abbott.

He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Abbott, and children: Afton (Trevor) Call, Shannon (Preston) Henrie, Aubrey (Austin) Pomikala, and Michael (Dainia) Abbott; his grandchildren: Rylee, Gentry, Jayda, Haven, Logan, Sadie, James, and Gemma; his siblings: Hal (Terri) Abbott and Andrea (Michael) Houghtaling.
