Jim Hansen

Richfield, Utah

James Berge Hansen, 74, passed away September 11, 2018 in Richfield. He was born June 22, 1944, in Salt Lake City to Harold and Leila Hansen. He married Verae Christensen, of Kanosh, in the Manti Temple December 21, 1966.

Jim served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sao Paulo Brazil from 1963-1965. Later in life he and Verae returned to Brazil to serve another mission in the Campinas Brazil Temple. While waiting for their visas, Jim and Verae served 5 months in the Manhattan Temple Mission. Jim also served faithfully throughout his life in a variety of church callings. One of his favorite callings was as a ward and stake Family History consultant. He and Verae also enjoyed serving as workers in the Manti Temple for the last 13 years. His love of serving overflowed into shoveling snow for neighbors or helping them with computer problems. Even at work he loved helping others and gladly participated in helping with the Teton Dam disaster. He was a computer technician for Utah Power and Light.

Jim wasn’t afraid of learning new skills and always had a project he was working on, from building two houses with his family, to running his own computer business, to building models with his sons. Jim also loved teaching others. He was an accomplished electrician and helped several family members wire their houses while also teaching them how to do it on their own. Even as a boy he had projects, like modifying his accordion so it was an electric accordion.

Jim’s love of computers and all things scientific led to him being a pioneer in the areas of mobile radios and home computers. In 1975 he purchases the parts and assembled his own home personal computer, an Altair 8800. He co-founded the Salt Lake City Computer Club with 4 friends which grew to over 150 members. Because of Jim, his LDS ward in Granger was one of the first wards to have a computerized directory. Jim also helped his sons construct a homemade telescope (still in use today) that he and his family used for star parties whenever the power went out. His other passion was truck driving with Maji Trucking.

He exemplified mercy, hard work, and love of learning. We will miss his wit, his smile, his hugs, and advice.

Jim is survived by his wife, Verae, Richfield; children: Becky (Glenn) Stoneman, Richfield; Michael (Renee) Hansen, Aurora, CO; David (Shandrae) Hansen, Hyrum; Cheri (Ammon) Trimble, Salina; Debra (Alvin) Gates, Richfield; Richard (Naomi) Hansen, West Valley City; Jeffrey Hansen, Hyrum; mother, Leila, Murray; 25 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; siblings: Carol (Ken) Sterzer, Sandy; Bonnie (Clive) Romney, Murray.
