James Dorsey Calaway

James “Jim” Calaway, 87 passed away on Tuesday, September 1, at his home in Hurricane, Utah.

Jim was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. He lived a life centered on service, always willing to help others in any way he could. His kindness, steady presence, and genuine care for those around him touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed.

Jim was born on August 10, 1939, to Dorsey and Marjorie Calaway. He grew up in St. George and Monroe, Utah, where he developed a deep love for the outdoors. Horseback riding, hunting, and camping were central to his youth and helped shape his strong work ethic and appreciation for rural life.

He loved sports and was a talented athlete, playing baseball, tennis, and basketball at Sevier High School, where he graduated in 1957. After high school, Jim moved to Beaver and worked at the local gas station.

On July 23, 1959, Jim married Donna Robins. They moved to Salt Lake City. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1966 with a degree in mathematics. During their marriage, Jim began his professional life at Hercules as a systems engineer. He continued his career at Utah Power & Light and Northwest Pipeline. Together, Jim and Donna had four children and were later divorced.

On August 5, 1982, Jim married Karen Mangelson Hughston, beginning a new chapter. Karen had five children, and together they created a lively home. During their marriage, Jim continued his career at Citibank, which led him to relocate briefly to South Dakota. He soon returned to Utah, working in computer sales before joining the State of Utah, where he spent the remainder of his professional career. Jim and Karen were married for 29 years before her passing.

On June 8, 2021, Jim married Camie Bishop, beginning another meaningful chapter of companionship and shared life. Jim and Camie enjoyed spending their summers in Sandy, Utah, and their winters in Hurricane, Utah, embracing the rhythm of two places they loved. Camie took excellent care of Jim, and he loved her dearly.

Jim enjoyed trap shooting, hunting, and cheering on the Utah Jazz. He was a competitive shooter and earned many trophies over the years, a reflection of both his skill and dedication. He also loved fun cars—from his first GTO,1980 Camaros, and later moved on to Cadillacs. He continued his passion for the outdoors through four-wheeling and side-by-side trips, which brought him a lot of great memories with family and friends.

He was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully in many callings, including stake clerk, family history, and various temple assignments. He was a devoted home teacher, forming lasting friendships through his service and genuine care for others.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Dorsey and Marjorie Calaway; his sister, Mildred Nelson; his grandson, Jared Andrews; and his granddaughter, Katie Calaway. He is also preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Robins; his second wife, Karen Calaway; his stepson, Shane Hughston; and his stepson, Ian Bishop.

He is survived by his wife, Camie Bishop Calaway; his children: Cory Calaway of West Jordan; Kim Calaway of Provo; Tresha Andrews of Yorktown, Virginia; and Carl Calaway of Lindon; as well as 23 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of love, service, and strength.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 12:00 noon, at the Monroe Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 AM at Magleby Mortuary(50 S 100 W, Richfield). The burial will be at the Monroe Cemetery.
