Jane Marie Leckie
Manti, Utah
Jane Marie Carter Leckie was born February 22, 1956, in Columbus, Ohio to Robert Lee Carter and Nancy Payne. She was raised in Columbus until her family moved to Fairfax, Virgina (near Washington DC) when she was 13. Jane was baptized at age 16 a year after she found a Book of Mormon in her basement and started reading it. She attended Woodson High School and graduated in May 1974. In June 1974 she traveled west to Provo, Utah to attend Brigham Young University. She enjoyed the summer and had lots of fun.
In the fall of 1974, she met Scott Leckie through a mutual friend. No sparks at first but by Thanksgiving, not only sparks but a full-blown fire. They married the following April (1975) in the Manti Temple. They lived two years in south Provo, while Scott finished his schooling and graduated in April 1977. During those years she worked at the Language Training Center and Sears. At Sears she was a repair person for vacuums, sewing machines and air compressors. In February of 1976, she gave birth to a daughter, Audrey Jane (who was stillborn). In February of 1977, she gave birth to Scott Andrew, her first son.
After graduation, Jane and Scott moved to Cincinnati Ohio for work. Scott worked for Cincinnati Milacron and Jane was busy with Scotty, home, and church. In March of 1979, Robert, her second son, was born. In late December 1979, Jane and Scott moved back to Provo so Scott could attend BYU for graduate school. After school, Jane and Scott moved to Bowie, Maryland. In May of 1981, David, her third son, was born. Work then took them to Cleveland, Ohio.
Cleveland was a busy time for Jane with 3 young children, community involvement, church service and foster children. In 1986, Jane and Scott moved back to Cincinnati. Jane and Scott lived in Milford, Ohio for 17 years. During these years she served as president of the PTA (for 2 years each time) of the grade school, middle school, high school and southwest Ohio District. She also worked at a quilt shop and taught quilt classes. She had an exceptional talent at blending colors, patterns and shapes to make the most beautiful quilts.
In 2003, Jane and Scott received a call from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to serve as proselyting missionaries in Argentina Buenos Aires South Mission. Jane and Scott served in three areas – Castelli, San Clemente and General Madriaga. She loved her time in Argentina and the wonderful people she got to meet every day. She especially enjoyed teaching the children. She also taught piano lessons, English lessons and weaving. She often said she enjoyed her mission so much because she felt that every day she made a difference.
2005 found Jane back in the States living in New Harmony, building a new home, quilting and serving. About 2010, her health problems started. She was a real trooper. She never gave up and never complained. She was kind and giving. She loved everybody, especially her 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Jane was a great friend to all she met. She will be greatly missed.
