Janet Mathie

April 22, 1935 — October 9, 2025

Listen to Obituary

Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Janet Miller Mathie, 90, returned to her Heavenly Father in Heber City, Utah, on October 9, 2025. Janet was born on April 22, 1935, in Ogden, Utah, to Horace and Katherine Jones Miller. She grew up in Ogden except for a few years during World War II when her father worked as an engineer for the federal government in Pueblo and Fruita, Colorado. She graduated from Weber High School in Ogden in 1953.

Janet married Robert (Bob) Alvin Mathie, the cowboy of her dreams, in Paris, Idaho, on March 6, 1953. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 24, 1958. Bob and Janet spent most of their adult lives in San Jose, California, where he worked for many years in the automotive service business. Janet worked with him part-time in his business while raising their family of six children. They retired in 1998 and moved to Richfield, Utah. Bob passed away in 2017.

Janet was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings through the years in California, including as Primary president twice, as Ward Young Women’s President, and in the Stake Young Women Presidency. She was a loving, hard-working homemaker, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and an example to her posterity of serving family. A long list of cherished family pets, including Merry, Cagney, Lacey, Sonny, Smokey, and Penny, lit up her life.

Janet is survived by her 6 children and their spouses: Craig (Kim) Mathie, Monroe; Curtis (Shauna) Mathie, Tracy, CA; Cathryn (Roger) McDowell, Snowflake, AZ; David (Shelly) Mathie, Pleasant Grove; Kelly Jo (William) Cleverly, Heber City; and Christopher (Kim) Mathie, San Jose, CA;

 21 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and a special “grand dog’ named Jasper, as well as her in-laws, Lela Hepner, William (Margaret) Mathie, Ellen Hedin, Pat Mathie, and LaVere (Janet) Mathie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bob, her siblings and their spouses, Gwen (Ron) Bell, Kathryn (Keith) Lund, Vesta Jo Salerno, and Lewis (Lucille) Miller; In-Laws, Ronald Hedin,Charlie Hepner. Dennis Mathie, and Ronnie Mathie; Gene & Virginia Mathie; grandsons: David Jordan Mathie and Robert Lewis McDowell; and great-grandsons Maddox Cale Mathie and Cannon Richard Nielson.

The family expresses sincere appreciation for their kind care of our mother by hospice caregivers Josie, Rosa, and Kat, and to all the caregivers in the Spring Garden memory care unit. We are also indebted to our mother’s former neighbors and fellow ward members in the Richfield 2nd Ward for their many kindnesses.
