Listen to Obituary

Our angel mother, Katheryn Sorenson Hyatt, passed away peacefully the morning of August 8, 2025.

Kathy was born in Glenwood, Utah, on January 14, 1938, to Harvey G. and Leola Gillespie Sorenson. She enjoyed a wonderful childhood. Her two older sisters, Ila Dean and Erma, were her idols. She had a special relationship with her younger brother Perry, her niece Vicki, and her only living grandparent, Matilda Gillespie – living just a block away.

Kathy attended elementary school in Glenwood, Jr. High and High School in Richfield, graduating in 1956. While she was attending Snow College she met her husband, Melvin K. Hyatt. Mel and Kathy were married on March 29, 1958, in the Manti Temple. She dearly loved Mel and her role as a wife, mother, and homemaker. Her two daughters, four sons, and grandchildren were the light of her life. Dad absolutely adored Mom and their example of love and devotion is matchless.

Mom was a true disciple of Jesus Christ and lived her life serving others. She loved the Lord and served faithfully in numerous callings within her ward and stake. Mom enjoyed attending the temple, reading the scriptures, good books and music. She always seemed to have a song in her heart, and on her lips. She had an angelic singing voice that will continue to be heard in the hearts of her family. Mom wrote many poems for different occasions. She was an excellent seamstress, gardener, and appreciated the beauty of the earth. She grew the most beautiful flowers and made delicious meals for her family, often from vegetables grown by her and Dad in their wonderful garden.

Mom enjoyed working at the Division of Workforce Services for 20 years. She hosted numerous luncheons for friends and co-workers and will be greatly missed by many who were recipients of her kindness and generous love. She truly was an angel on earth. She made the world a more beautiful place with her constant acts of thoughtful service.

Kathy is survived by her children: Kim (Jon) Miller, Henderson, NV; Anette (Ben) Walker, Richfield; Darren (Karen) Hyatt, Round Rock, TX; Scott (Holly), Richfield; Matt (Kelly), Mapleton; Chris, St. George. Her 12 granddaughters and 13 grandsons will greatly miss her as she never forgot a birthday or special event in their lives. She is also blessed to have 27 great-grandchildren…and counting!

What a wonderful reunion it must have been for Mom to greet her parents, sisters, brother, and our dad. We will forever be grateful for the matriarch of our family and thank her for showing us by her example how to live a happy and fulfilling life.

A special thanks to our hospice friends, Doreen and Lyndsey, who loved and cared for Mom beyond their hospice responsibilities. We can’t thank them enough.
