Mary Laverne Hill

August 28, 1949 — October 3, 2021

Mary Hill
Mayfield, Utah

Mary Laverne Nielsen Hill, 72, of Mayfield, UT passed away on October 3, 2021, in Centerfield, UT after a valiant battle with Multiple Sclerosis and Cancer. She was born on August 28, 1949, in Mt. Pleasant, UT to Maurice and Ardell Nielsen.

She grew up in Ephraim and was the youngest child and only daughter in a family of six boys and was loved dearly by her parents and brothers. She graduated from Manti High School, Snow College, and the University of Utah with a degree in Elementary Education. She married her eternal sweetheart, Danny Hill on August 16, 1982, in the Jordan River Temple. After their marriage, she moved her three boys (Mike, Chris, and Rob) to Gunnison, and taught 3rd grade at Gunnison Valley Elementary School. She taught school for 22 years before taking an early retirement due to complications from Multiple Sclerosis. She had a passion for music and a real talent for playing the piano. She learned to play the piano by ear. She brought her love of music into the classroom and taught her school children to sing and perform in many different musical programs and plays.

During her earlier years she had a great love of the outdoors and loved skiing, horseback riding, camping, and riding four-wheelers with family. Her family and brothers have always been the love of her life.

She was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many various capacities. She insisted on keeping her temple recommend current even when she could no longer attend, due to her physical limitations. Though she had many health challenges, she will forever be remembered for her positive attitude and her ability to uplift others, despite her own ongoing struggles. She touched many lives and will be missed by all who knew her.

Her sweetheart, Danny was always by her side. He has devoted the last 20+ years of his life almost entirely to her care. He was a regular at the care center in Centerfield, feeding her, waiting on her, taking her on van rides, and seeing to her every need. Danny’s devotion to Mary is a true example of unconditional love.

The family would like to sincerely express their appreciation to all of the medical personnel, administration, and care givers at Mission at Community Living Center in Centerfield, as well as all of the hospice nurses and staff, and a special thanks to Dr. Wade Anderson, for all of their countless time and devotion to her care. To all of her lifelong friends, for your phone calls, visits, and concern for her well-being…thank you so very much. She loved and cherished each of you.

Mary is survived by her husband of 39 years Danny Hill; sons: Mike (Brooke) Cherry, Chris Cherry, Rob (Julie) Cherry, Val (Stacey) Hill, and Kurtley Hill; 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; brothers: Glen Nielsen, Reed Nielsen, Keith (Beverly) Nielsen, and Joe (Erlynne) Nielsen; and sister-in-law Carol Nielsen; and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins.
