He attended school in Parowan, graduating from Parowan High School in 1954. He graduated from Central Utah Vocational School (UVU) in 1957, and furthered his education at Snow College and Utah State. Mel was the first Auto Body instructor in the newly formed Sevier Valley Tech, where he taught for 30 years until his retirement in 1993.  He enjoyed his students and formed lasting friendships with many of them.
