Shirley Hendrickson Peterson, 84, died February 23, 2012 at her home in Gunnison. She was born September 20, 1927 in Clarion to Lemar and Mary Helen Bond Hendrickson. She married Dwight Clinton Peterson March 5, 1952. Their marriage was solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple November 1964. He preceded her in death August 18, 2005.

Shirley’s desire to serve others began early in life, enrolling in flight school for the civil defense effort, attending nursing school in Salt Lake, and then working as a nurse for doctors Reese and Stewart, and serving friends and neighbors in the Gunnison Valley. Shirley and Dwight continued their life together in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they raised their family of three boys. Shirley worked as a manager for Desert Federal Credit Union until she and Dwight retired and returned to Utah where they quickly resumed friendships and continued to serve. Shirley loved people and gave welcome hugs to everyone she greeted, touching many lives as a volunteer at Gunnison Valley Hospital.

Shirley is survived by two sons: David L. (Deborah) Peterson of Las Vegas; Ronald J. Peterson of Gunnison; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren with another on the way.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Brent D. Peterson; her parents; and brother, George Bruce Hendrickson.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 12:00 Noon in the Gunnison LDS Stake Center, where friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Gunnison City Cemetery . Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
