Vionne Holt
Torrey, Utah
Vionne Marie Duke Holt “Ma”, peacefully left this life on September 13, 2023, just a few weeks before her 91st birthday. Vionne was born in Draper and grew up there with grandparents in Lehi. She grew up poor and through it found incredible strength and resiliency. She married DeVon Holt from Torrey and they shared over 70 years together. They were stationed in San Antonio, Texas and Spokane, Washington during their time in the Air Force then moved back to Salt Lake City in the 50’s. They settled in the growing Glendale Park area and had 3 children: Rickey, Joel, and Bonnie.
Vee was a skilled caretaker, cleaning, cooking, sewing and was always busy in her garden and canning in the fall. If you haven’t had her “Dilly” bread, you haven’t lived. She had broad taste in music and there were always happy sounds in the house. She liked horror movies, Red Skelton, and Westerns.
She had several occupations due to her exceptional typing skills. She raised award winning tropical fish and betas and became president of the fish society. She served as a Scout leader, Primary teacher, worked in the PTA and taught us we could do anything we set our minds to do. Later they moved to Las Vegas where she owned a pet store and refined her art of quilting, embroidery, and cross stitch. By then she had 3 grandchildren who were constant visitors to the swimming pool with mac and cheese after. She loved her gardens, rocks, plate collection, fishpond, old furniture, 3 poodles and a pit bull, fresh lemon and cream pies, and life in general. She always took care of her family and made all her friends feel like family. She loved Christmas and made it a huge event for all of us.
Wayne County, Torrey, and Boulder Mountain were the places they would vacation, and she enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and jeeping. When they acquired the family homestead in Torrey, they spent their summers there in the red rocks. Her gardens were amazing, and you could always find her out digging and planting. She lived a good life. A full life. She taught us all how to live and love and survive in the world.
Over time she had some back injuries and survived a fight with cancer. In these last years it affected her mobility and caused her much pain. She was devastated by the loss of her sweetheart DeVon and her son Joel.
She is survived by her children, Rick and Debbie Rigby Holt, Bonnie Holt McGrew; her grandchildren: Cody McGrew, Kyle Preston and Trisha Holt Preston, Colby Holt and Kristy Henze Holt; 5 great grandchildren: Jones Preston, Noby Preston, Kinley Holt, Kaysha Holt, and Cayden Holt; and her sister-in-law, LeOla Holt Miles.
We will always miss her smile, her laugh, the way she loved us and everything she brought to this life, but we believe she is now free to roam again and be with her loved ones and is finally at pain level 0.
We encourage you to share any stories or memories in the guestbook below. Ma loves that stuff.
