Melvin K. Hyatt, 85,  passed away June 3, 2021 at his home in Richfield.  He was born in Las Vegas, NV on January 20, 1936 to Chester B and Vilate Holt Hyatt.  The family moved to Parowan in 1939. He attended school in Parowan, graduating from Parowan High School in 1954. He graduated from Central Utah Vocational School (UVU) in 1957, and furthered his education at Snow College and Utah State. Mel was the first Auto Body instructor in the newly formed Sevier Valley Tech, where he taught for 30 years until his retirement in 1993.  He enjoyed his students and formed lasting friendships with many of them.

While attending school in Provo, he met and fell in love with Kathy Sorenson. They were married in the Manti Temple on March 29, 1958. They lived in Cedar City until September of that same year when he was drafted in the U.S. Army. Kathy joined him when he was permanently stationed at Fort Benning, GA. Their first child, Kim, was born in Georgia. When his service time was over, they moved back to Richfield where they raised their six children.

Mel was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Young Men’s presidency, Elders Quorum president, and High Priest group leadership, Sunday School presidency, and his favorite calling, Scout Master.

His greatest joy was being with Kathy and spending time with his family . He loved sporting events, playing basketball and watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports, music and the arts.

Mel is survived by his wife, Kathy; children: Kim (Jon) Miller, Anette (Ben) Walker, Darren (Karen) Hyatt, Scott (Holly) Hyatt, Matt (Kelly) Hyatt and Chris Hyatt; 12 granddaughters and 13 grandsons; 7 great-grandsons and 5 great-granddaughters; brothers: Alden (Maryann) Hyatt, Springville; Blaine (Linda) Hyatt, Kansas.

Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Shayla DeMille.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Richfield 9th Ward Chapel, 159 North 400 West. Friends may call Friday evening from 6-7 p.m. at the Magleby Mortuary or Saturday morning at the ward chapel from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Richfield City Cemetery with military honors by the Richfield V.F.W.
